There are so many services that are provided by the government we do not appreciate. Things we again take for granted. How could traffic flow without traffic signals? Or if there we not any roads at all? There are so many things that we all take for granted.
These services are provided by the tax revenue generated by income taxes, sales taxes, use taxes, taxes on products and services and a great deal of other taxes. All of these taxes add up to a great deal of money. But a great deal of things get done as well.
Take defense or the armed forces. Without armed forces a country would be a sitting duck. Nothing to stop an invading force or an inside clandestine force from causing a lot of trouble. Not to mention how helpful they are in a natural disaster. We should also not forget how many jobs these positions create and contribute to the overall economy.
Police and sheriff's departments. Even if you are just a nerd and not violent the threat of being caught doing something wrong keeps you from doing it. You know driving a little faster than you should. Not stopping at stop signs. Doing something illegal. And when someone does do something illegal they deal with it. Not to mention acts of violence and accidents.
Water and sewer systems. No matter how much of a desperado you are you sure do appreciate going to the sink and getting water and going to the bathroom. How could we do without it? The water produced by most municipalities is as good or better than bottled water which for the most part is tap water anyway. Only bottled water produces 60 million waste bottles a day. Get yourself some stainless steel bottles and fill them at the sink, put them in the fridge and use them tomorrow too! Just think of all the places around the world that do not have the luxury of fresh water and sanitation services.
There are other things like street lights, sidewalks, fire hydrants, crosswalks, libraries, health departments and any other service that you can think of. I have just touched a few. See what you can come up with!
