They Say Fuel Consumption Is Down

They say that fuel consumption is down. That is a good thing. Most of our appliances and devises still use electricity. Although we are using more appliances.
Oil consumption is down. That is a good thing as well. But when I get on the road there is just bumper to bumper traffic. I have had the occasion to be on the interstate highway. The traffic was heavy. Even at night. I remember the old days when I would go from Louisville, Kentucky to Evansville, Indiana or St. Louis, Missouri and there would be hardly any traffic on the road. It was all most like you were by yourself. With the exception of an occasional Indiana State Police car. Who really had not interest in you if you were going under a hundred miles as hour. Indiana is a cool state. Kentucky as well.
Maybe it is the same way now in these rural locations. But here in Florida the interstate and local traffic is nearly always bumper to bumper. How can they say fuel consumption is down? Are the cars that much more fuel efficient? I do not see how.
If fuel consumption is down how come they are building a new gas station every few thousand feet? There are no less than five gas stations built on the road I live on in the last year. Would they be building them if people weren't buying gas? I do not think so.
