On PBS I caught an excellent recipe for a baked asparagus. Crunchy like French fries. Something a bit different. Maybe a bit more healthy too. But with all the ingredients, maybe not. But tasty anyway.
Some of us may have never liked asparagus. I did not as a child, but do now. Or at least give it a try.
Get about a pound of asparagus. Always wash your vegetables. Even if it says it is washed when you buy it. Cut it in half length wise. In a bowl whisk two eggs. Add flour, Panko bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese. This can get a little thick. Just put a little water in and coat the asparagus in batter. Some put mayonnaise on the asparagus before coating with batter. I did not because I did not find any mayo in the fridge. Guess I should get some.
At any rate, preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Use a cookie sheet and spray it with Pam. Cooking time will vary as to how your oven works and how crisp you want the asparagus. So just watch it as you cook and try a sample after about 15 minutes to determine when you feel they are done.
A nice little different treat. Again found on PBS.

Idiots
Think of about all the things we do for being an idiot. Then you have to have the regret.
An idiot is below a moron and and imbecile. An idiot is a mentally deficient having intelligence in the lowest measurable range, being unable to guard against common dangers and incapable of learning connected speech. A blockhead. These are folks that were rated as not as bright as you are.
For the most part I realize that I am not as bright as I thought I am.I could also be described as obstinate and ornery. Two of my other virtues. Even being awarded a high IQ. I have done a lot of dumb and stupid things. Most people think that dumb and stupid are the same think. In my world I consider dump not knowing and stupid as knowing and not doing the right thing. So as an individual we can do both dumb and stupid things. Even when in reality we are not idiots. Although acting as one. Sometimes by being dumb (not knowing) or being stupid (knowing better but doing it anyway) we do things are just not that bright.
I think that as a society we are moving to be more like idiots. As as a race our skill sets have evolved a great deal. Maybe not for the better. We no longer are capable of providing our own food. Most of us that do not already have money trade our time and energy to earn cash to pay for food, shelter and other needs and wants.
As technology advances, we continue to more away from being able to survive and be social. Now we have our little smart phones and drift into our own little worlds. Not dealing with the outer world. Kind of like a pacifier you would give to a little baby. When I am having lunch in the break room everyone is sitting there in a catatonic state. But since everyone else is doing it, this have became the norm. If everyone else is jumping off a bridge, I guess you have to do so also.
When think about our attitudes of we have about different eras. Decades etc. You think of the American Civil War Era. How they dressed and wore their hair. You know the 1920s with the pin striped suits and flapper women. The 1930s and 1940s with men in suits, women with dresses, heels, hairstyles and hats. The 1960s and 1970s with mod and hippie styles. A return to classic styles in the 1980s and 1990s. Now you hardly ever see anyone dressed nice. Just frumpy at best. The snapshots of the current era will have all these sloppily dressed folks walking around with their heads bent down staring at something in their hand. What will people think in the future?
The rich are getting richer. The working poor, poorer. And still we act like idiots. People go out of their way to be an a**hole. When most of the time it would take less effort to just be nice. Why does everyone have to have a bad attitude. Why are people (even young people) sick and tired all the time? People go to the gym, but when they get to work they are tired and cannot do anything. Get your exercise at work. Novel idea.
The bottom line is we are not functioning well as a society. Is it because there are more takers than givers. As Rodney King said "Why can't we just get along?". In the Civil War 630,000 soldiers died with countless thousands to "free the slaves". We are all in this mess called life together. Why do we need to belligerent? Why do we have to be mean to each other? Why do we not think and do your job efficiently and with a tad bit of enthusiasm?
I constantly have to tell people to do something. After a while you would have think that they have caught on. They have caught on alright. They have thought of every menial task to do preventing them from doing what needs to be done. Everyone wants to be a loafer. Again why not just think of what needs to be done and do it. Nothing upsets me more than a few workers standing around talking when a customer is wanting help. Then when I call someone to help them they just look at me as if I am some kind of monster. No one seems to want to do anything but pick the lowest fruit from the tree. The go to mentality that created the United States is dead. Why would you want to bother with a $10 an hour job when you can live better for free?
The more the population grows the more idiots we will have born. So if you are not an idiot already, try not to be one.

The Craziness Of The Holidays
The Holidays are right here right now. The grocery store is absolutely insane with customers. A lot of new faces with old faces mean that they have friends and relatives in town for the Thanksgiving Holiday. As usual people are in a frenzy. Shopping and getting ready to cook for the Holiday. Or some people simply just eat out. My family has done this for years. As it can be more economical and certainly less complicated. No shopping. No cooking. Nothing to clean up. Many buffets offer other food than the traditional. So if you do not like turkey and stuffing you can enjoy something else. If it is however on the menu.
We are however like sheep. Follow tradition. Pig out. Make a mess. Have leftovers and than mostly waste them. People than sit around sick from eating too much and watch the insanely stupid sport of football. And than we worry about Black Friday. A day named so because that is the day a lot of retailers go from red ink to black ink on their accounting records. For those of you who are too young or not abreast with accounting. Red ink on a journal means losing money and black ink means making money. So Black Friday means you have reached a point where you are now making money. So it it all about making money.
In the old days the holiday was the holiday. Everyone went back to work the next day. Now we make four day holidays out of just about everything. So now Thanksgiving is a four day holiday for people who work and do not work anyway. Franklin Roosevelt made Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of the month of November instead of the last to kick up the economy. To get us ready for the next Holiday. Christmas.
Again years ago Christmas was a one day Holiday. Now we drag it out for at least a week or so. I admit, I used to take about the week before and a day or so after for vacation. Being in sales a lot of business customers realized they needed to spend money before the end of the year to realize tax breaks or to not show too much profit. Like shooting fish in a barrel. I could rake that last week of the year. So I had to be there. As my other business was summer based.
Then we come to in my mind the least valuable holiday. New Years. Really just an accounting reset. As we change the calender. A big time to dump inventories. As normally you as taxed on then at the end of January. So in January you have the White Sales and every other thing you can think of.
The exercise machine advertisements start hitting then. As you have gotten fat over the Holidays. Don't worry though. You have the Stupid Bowl and then Valentine's Day to worry about. But do not. Easter is on it's way.

Cooking Shows
This may sound boring, but I like cooking shows. I used to like the Food Channel. But they have so many stupid shows now I never hardly watch it. I remember the good old shows like Emeril Live, etc. Kind of like Sy Fy Channel. Too many stupid shows.
Now I catch a lot of cooking shows on PBS. This opens me up to some different meals. Even on a budget. Some different twists on things that you cook all the time and are getting tired of.
Many of these meals were originated by people who only had so many sources of food to deal with. A lot of them are sort of old home cooking that were prepared by people that did not have access to a lot of different things or the money to buy real expensive things.
Cook's Kitchen, Lidia's Home Cooking, Ming, Sara Molten, Eat, Drink Italy, Jacques Pepin, Modern Irish Cooking, Norwegian Cooking, Barbeque U, Chefs Life, etc.
Check them out. I think you may find some new dishes that will be available to you without breaking the budget. Sometimes just a little seasoning or cooking your food in a different way makes something new and delicious.
Watch these shows and find something new and fun.

World Wide Readership
I want to here from every one around the world. We are all on it together. Let's get it together.
I feel lucky that I have received readership from all around the world. This also makes me proud. I hope that some of the posts have been informative and entertaining.
When I started this I did nit think it would go worldwide. I did however think it would generate some revenue by now. And it has not.
Even with all the cool ads I have. So anyway thank you.

Making Your Lunch For Work Instead Of Buying Something Every Day
If you spend $5 a day on lunch you spend $150 a month. That sounds like a lot when put that way. So if you are now doing most of your cooking at home. Take your leftovers to work. This is often healthier and definitely less expensive.
Especially now that we are in fall and winter soups are a good pick. This week I made chicken soup and vegetable soup this week. I can easily put this in a plastic container and take it to work.

Test Results From Chain Store Shopping Versus Discount Store
After shopping locally for a few weeks I have found that shopping at a discount store definitely saves money. If I make the trip and take the time I save money going to the discount. Even though it is not convenient.
I usually block out about two hours to go to the discount store. If it ends up taking less time, that is just a bonus. I have to drive. But on the outside it costs about $2. And as I do not have a social agenda, I have the time.
You have to pick up your own things. You have to bag your own goods. Big deal. I can do that. Instead of bagging in the store I just take the cart to the car. I put all the small items in laundry baskets. I do not worry about bagging anything big like milk, potatoes, detergent, paper towels, tp, etc. It is easy to take in that way.
If I go once a month and shop big I really come out. As I am planning ahead with a list. As we develop a pattern as to what we use. Today's trip cost some money. But a little over twice as much as a couple little bags cost me at my store. I should not have to buy a lot of things for over a month.
A once a month trip to stock up on staples saves money. You just stock up on the big things and if you have to buy little things during the month so mote it be.
I have found that I can save on the little things. Spices, crackers, chips, condiments, dry goods like flour and also cooking oil. Olive oil is at least half the price. Maybe it isn't the best brand, but it is olive oil.
I can still get the things that you need and use up quickly at my store. They are a little higher though. The major thing is that you can cook at home and make leftovers for work lunches.
As I am not on food stamps I cannot demand fresh food and eat $8 sub sandwiches. You can make so many great things at home. With a little effort. But you have to put forth that effort. I know it takes time away from your social media. And telephone time too.

It's My World And I Like It
It seems like I have created my own little world. And I seem to like it. At this juncture I just like to stay at home. With the exception of going to work, the doctor, shopping (which I try to do when out) I like to stay at home.
I know some people cannot seem to do this. As I see them two or three times a day in my store. Do they not know how to make a grocery list? Are they so bored? Do they just like wasting peoples time? Do they like to drive?
Do you know how much energy the country would save if these people could make a loop with their errands? Do you know how much energy is wasted by these folks?
We could save half of the gasoline that is used if these people would just stay home and plan their trips. It would save a lot of pollution and traffic accidents too. As all the traffic has increased due to the snow birds returning to Florida. These are people who are so well off that they can come and go as they please. And by coming to Florida they find an ready and willing work force to meet their needs.
So when you get to your own little world. Like it. As you will have to put on your happy face. This is when we generate revenue. I took a part time job a couple of years ago at a country club that sixty percent of the residents only came there for the winter. These were half a million dollar homes that had cars and all the amenities. Just sitting there idle for eight months a year. These folks came from all around the world. They come here and spend money. As they have the money. This is what keeps my little part of the world afloat.
If you live in a tourist area like I do this is your bread and butter. So you live a good life. Working for the people who come here for a good winter.

Potato Pancakes
Potato pancakes are a great comfort food. As with just about any cooking it requires a little bit of effort. Not overwhelming though.
Peal and grade four potatoes. Use the fine grading. It just mixes better. I have tried the larger grates and it doesn't turn out as well. Beat two eggs in a separate bowl. Add about two table spoons of flour. Salt and pepper. Cut an onion up to very little pieces. As small as you can cut them.
In the bowl that you have the potatoes mix in the flour, eggs, salt, pepper, onions and maybe a few more spices.
Get your large skillet hot with about an eighth in of cooking oil. Place a wooden spoon full of the mixture in the frying pan. Let them cook thoroughly on each side. Let them dry on a cooking sheet with paper towels to absorb the grease.
Do not crowd your pan as you need to cook these in small batches. After a few minutes of sitting they will be great. They are good with butter, jelly, or apple sauce on them. A real treat.

My Business Model For Colloge In 1980
In college one of my classes in business required that I come up with a working model of a business that would be successful. So just like my paper that eventually turned out to be about Lyndon Johnson. This took some time to figure out.
So after a little thought I came up with a Harley-Davidson dealership that was no in any town. But at an intersection of a couple of big highways. This put me in the middle of two market areas. It also removed me from being close to any other businesses. I guess it was close to a small town in southern Indiana called Yankeetown.
Now in 1980 Harley Davidson was about out of business. Plagued by poor workmanship, old technology, low sales and a parent company (AMF) who was probably more interested in bowling balls than motorcycles. They did come up with a few cool models. The 1977 Low Rider and the 1977 Sportster Cafe Racer. Both of which would be in my stable if I had anything to do with it. I have ridden a Low Rider. And could of bought one in 1979 for $1500 but stupidly did not. The XLCR I never rode but did like the look.
So this place would be out in the middle of no where. Making it the place. Do to Indiana law I could put in gas pumps and apply and get a beer and wine license. This is a time before the Harley rage came about and you had to wait for a year to get one. Most dealers had many previous model years sitting there with dust on them. So being forward thinking I bought a Harley Davidson. This was the day and age that you were a big dog if you had a Kawasaki ZR1.
The Harley Davidson was so mechanical. For lack of a better term. Everything was just out there. With a function. Not some pretty boxed up compact and modern looking. But with a little tweaking in would run pretty fine. I was lucky enough to get a FXE that was provided with the correct transmission. The FXE was supposed to get a close ratio four speed transmission instead of a FLH (Touring Model) wide ratio. Makes a big difference when you are trying to accelerate quickly. The old Harley Davidson motorcycles were a points, plugs and condenser ignition. There were no rev limiters. I took mine to Tom in Indiana. Told him to make it hot. He did. Balanced and blue printed. Ported and polished. That old Super Glide could now eat a ZR1. I could always beat the Japanese bike on top end and also surprise them on taking off. My bike was also modified. But a friend of mine that was a mechanic. We went to a junk yard and bought every Ford Motor Company power steering oil cooler we could find. One of the worst things about a V twin is that the back cylinder is not getting as much air for cooling. So by cooling the oil the cylinders stay cooler. Making the engine last longer and run better.
All things considered the 1975 Super Glide was a very reliable motorcycle. I beat that bike so hard that the front wheel went out of round. I bought an cast wheel from the Harley dealer in Evansville. I just called him on the phone and met him at his house with money as he only lived down the street.
The Harley business model got an A. But the professor could not understand why anyone would want to get in that type of business. Who knew that Harley would soon take off so well.

Should This Blog Continue Or Just Fade Away?
Should this blog continue or just fade away? It has had readership from all over the world. I do get a few views everyday. But have not deposited any money with all the ads. I have only received six comments. Maybe it is just a waste of time.
Do the topics mean anything to anyone? I have tried to touch on subjects that are informative, educational, historical, and hopefully entertaining. Again I would like to thank everyone who has read the posts.
Again I started this to make a little money on the side. And with the initial deposit to confirm a bank account, nothing. But that is OK as it has became a hobby.
I would like a little interaction. Someone saying that was a good post or that it was terrible. I guess that I have never came up with that super good post that everyone shares.
It is what it is. A cow don't make ham.

Meal Time
As I continue to watch a lot of over the air TV I watch a lot of cooking shows on PBS. A lot of us think that a meal is special if it is at an expensive restaurant. But that doesn't have to be the case. Just about any meal can be made kind of special.
I guess it can be broken down to two mentalities. Some people eat to live and others live to eat. But there is middle ground there too. Animals pretty much just eat, fornicate, produce feces, urinate, sleep and die. Domestic animals are used to either perform a task or are cared for till they reach a maturity with which they can be used for a raw material or food source. Of course task animals are now as widely used now and hove been replaced by machines. Then of course there are pets. Pets and domestic animals are fed on a somewhat regular basis. Which is what domesticated them in the first place. Think about it. Wild animals on the other hand forage and attempt to eat constantly. Their whole life cycle is about eating and breeding. While not to become prey themselves making them food for another.
As humans over the thousands of years we learned that it is better to raise food then chase it. Plants and animals that have proven over the eons to to edible and life sustaining. Some of the more primitive societies till of late have still survived with the hunter and gather mentality. But to do that you need a vast amount of things to eat and a relatively small population. Which usually has a short life span. So people learned to cultivate the land with crops that they could use to produce food for the entire year. They learned to preserve foods.
Now in this day and age it is not likely that every little individual or family can have their own little self sustaining farm. Which would provide them all the food they need and a bit of excess to sell for products that they need and cannot produce themselves. Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately we do not have to do this. We can work our little jobs and go to the grocery. Which for the most part our only venue for food. Except eating out all the time at restaurants.
Unfortunately we have set a high bar for our selves that every meal has to be some sort of Epicurean delight we seen on the Food Channel. Sometimes the most simple food we have eating growing up and have not had is really good. Gee, I did not think of potato pancakes. How about homemade chicken soup? See my older post on this by checking the search engine for this site. I have a good vegetable soup recipe and several others. These can be great left overs for work lunches.
I never understood it before. But the high point of my father's day is meal time. With him growing up in a coal mine camp in and after the Great Depression a meal was a big deal. There was no fast food. A company store to shop from with the company script (Many employers only gave employees company script to buy things with. You however had to use it at the company store. Your rent and taxes were deducted from your pay and a little cash to play with, that's it. How's that for the home of the free and brave!). So this is middle class? They supplemented there food with a great garden and some livestock. And born at home.
Lesson is this. Meal time is the best time of your day. Even if you have to pack your lunch. Make it a good one. It is the high point of your day.

Fall Is Great For Bicycle Commuting And Other Things
Some of us commute by bicycle year round. Whether by choice or as an only form of transportation. For the most part I cannot think of a better way to get around for relatively short distances. Within a two mile distance you can get there as quickly as in a car. Especially if you can find a way to dodge the traffic lights.
When I say fall is great for commuting, I can say that I as live in Florida. As the weather is not at a hundred degree heat index with rain everyday now. It is generally in the upper fifties at night and low eighties during the day. How is that for about right?
In locations that are already getting your first snow. I know that this isn't the best time of the year for you. But you plug along anyway. For this you should be commended. You do what you have to do.
So many of us work in jobs that are not exactly what we want. During the Economic Downturn of 2008 we took what what could and learned how to survive. How did you learn to survive? Did you take on a job that was "below" your skill level? Did you cut back on spending? Did you loose your house? Loose the job you had before? When the downturn first hit I would go to yard sales near me. Nice subdivisions. People were selling golf clubs, gas grill and all other kinds of unnecessary items. Electronics and so forth. But being a bottom feeder myself, i could not buy these things I did not need either.
There becomes a point of saturation. You take something that works and everybody jumps on the bandwagon. About the only thing that has opened up in the two mile stretch around my apartment complex in convenient stores and banks. So what do people do. Work at a convenient store, cash their $200 check at the bank and go spend it on fast food. What a strong economy! There was 200,000 jobs created in October. Swell. Of course these "new" jobs are for the "holiday" season or to replace the people who quit their jobs at the convenience stores! And are now signing up for unemployment.
I remember a time when I would not buy anything that wasn't made in the USA. At one time you could still actually find things that were made in the USA. Clothes, shoes, appliances, tools and just about everything. Because these things were made here people had jobs. Not a super high paying job, but a job that was substantially above middle wage. Creating that so called middle class. Most with benefits and some sort of retirement. People lived in little houses in neat little neighborhoods. Yes there was misfits too. But for the most part a pretty neat little system. If you kept your nose clean (wonder what they were talking about?) you could live nicely. Save some money for later, create a situation where your kids had some motivation and die. Leaving the next generation to carry the baton.
I am for raising the minimum wage. If it is across the board. Make a large tariff on imported goods. Making it an advantage to produce produces in the nation. Fifteen dollars an hour would make about thirty thousand a year. The upper lower class. But by providing jobs and tax revenue it would give people a job and lower the deficit. The Federal Government bailed out the mega rich in 2008. Now it is time to bail out the country. Not with entitlements, but with a restructuring of the economy as a whole. Just like in the 1930s. We keep hanging on to that system which worked them but is failing now. You cannot keep hanging things on something that is collapsing and expect it to continue to function. The problem is that system is overloaded. The population has tripled. People are living longer. And the willing work force is growing smaller. It just doesn't add up does it?
If the United States would not import as many junk items from abroad we buy from within. This sounds like old isolation policy. But it may be the key. Until the upper crust is affected by the way things are nothing is going to get done. All we are doing now is to encourage people to have kids, be lethargic, seek entitlements and live off the fat of the land. Plus all the imports are causing a lot of fossil fuel to be used creating global warming. So this should encourage all the tree hugging, trust fund babies, ex hippies that are fat off their old and gone parents that accumulated by working and saving. Not by a will. So these lazy liberals can same sex and tattoo them selves to death as far as I am concerned. As they are only out for themselves. They can live in their own little pitiful world. But don't try to take down the whole world with your selfishness. You would change your mind if you had to work for a living.
All of a sudden crude oil prices and gasoline prices are falling. How about that. First of all the Middle East suppliers are not a monopoly. We are pulling oil from the United States. And people are complaining about it? Buy up all they have to sell and build up the strategic reserves. Build more strategic reserves. Fill every tank available with the cheaper oil and continue to keep producing and storing here too. Jobs you know.
When the Russians came in and bought all the steel mills around the Pittsburgh area what was the first thing they done? They closed them. And putting a few thousand out of work. Maybe they can get a job at MacDonald's. Also crippling the ability of the USA to make steel. What a smooth move. So we can no longer make shoes, clothes, tools, steel, able bodied population that can do anything but stare at their phones and eat. Wanting to get off work as soon as possible as they are tired. To sit home and eat and play with their phones.
As far as pollution goes all these smart people coming up with video games could start working on that. When my father asked the nurse to do something for him. The nurse replied "we do not do that in Mexico". My father answered, "we are not in Mexico".

The PBS Radio Show The Peoples Pharmacy
On PBS there is a radio show that comes on here through WUSF the University of South Florida's radio station. One of three they have. I so much appreciate WUSF I am putting them in my life insurance policy.
I have always enjoyed PBS. Before the advent of cable the PBS stations were an alternative to the three commercial stations and a few independent stations. PBS filled the gaps with history, nature, cooking, hobbies, gardening, home repair, arts, music, sports, news and many other subjects.
My alarm is set to WUSF's news channel. On Saturdays the program is a little different. At seven o'clock The Peoples Pharmacy airs. It is hosted by Joe and Terry Graedon. They always have an interesting show talking about all things medical. With a lot of guests that have a lot of information. Sometimes they have a lot of info regarding natural, old home style, innovative and just about all else to ways you can make yourself feel better.
There are so many venues on WUSF. They have three radio stations with news, classical music and jazz. Informational programs. They have four television stations. All with interesting programing. As with all Public Broadcasting around the nation!

Fried Potatoes And Cabbage
A nice one skillet meal to try would be fried potatoes and cabbage. A big batch does not cost a lot of money, vegetarian, makes lots of left overs, filling, tastes good (if you like cabbage and potatoes) and may also be healthy. May turn into your meatless Monday favorite!
Get out a large skillet. My favorite is our course a large iron skillet. Peal and slice four or five potatoes. Put aside in the fridge for a few minutes. Peal and cut up two onions. Put three table spoons of oil into the skillet and bring it up to a medium heat. Arrange the potatoes in the skillet in a single layer. lightly brown them. Turn them once and add the onions.Add salt and pepper. Place a lid on the skillet and turn the heat down to low or one on your stove. Take your head of cabbage and peal off the outer leaves. Cut the bottom off the cabbage. It is OK to cut them into fairly large strips and a lot as in reduces a great deal with cooking. Bring the heat back up to a low-medium temp. You will smell it cooking and steaming. Which is what you want. By browning the potatoes they will stay together throughout the cooking process if you do not turn them too much.
You can make this fairly quickly or drag it out for a meal later in the day. It depends upon your schedule.
Cabbage has been around a long time. It has been a staple food around the world. So give it a whirl!
