Is Bicycle Commuting and Public Transportation A Frugal And Green Alternative For You?

I am fortunate as I can easily walk or ride a bicycle to work. Also to anywhere I really need to go with a little effort. For most people this luxury is not feasible. I can really get along without a car. I do however have a car and if I do not move it it costs $300 with payment and insurance. That does not include gas or maintenance. It was nice to have a car where everything worked. As my previous vehicle was a 25 year old truck which didn't have air, heat, radio and other things were breaking too. Well the new car (8 years old) developed a tiny problem. The windshield washer quit working. Both scenarios are a weeks pay to fix. Looks like I won't have a windshield washer for a while.
If you can work and live in a close proximity you do not need a car. If you can ride a bicycle you can increase your range. Having a good public transportation system is a plus too. A bus line runs past my apartment complex. It isn't the best but better then nothing.
If you are living paycheck to paycheck being green is down on the list. Frugal has to be on the top. You have to be more thoughtful to use public transportation. A bike gives you more flexibility but subjects you to the weather and security issues as you cannot lock the doors.
Get an inexpensive bicycle and get started to work and shopping if you can. You can save money and get exercise too.
