It Is Never Going To Be Perfect Bikes Watches Frugality Or Life

No matter what we set out to do there is always something to keep something from being perfect. This can be frustrating when you have thought you have given it the best and it still isn't quite perfect. This can drive you wild. Make you crazy. Waste a lot of time and energy both physical and mental on something that is tantamount to beating a dead horse. Barking up a tree. Don Quote attacking windmills.
Unfortunately I spend a lot of time and energy in just this. Sometimes money too. It is kind of  a hobby. Let's call it polishing a turd. I will waste or spend a lot of time messing with something that I know from the onset will have about a 50% chance of coming out as I had hoped. And a near zero chance of being perfect. As nothing ever is perfect.
It does however keep me occupied and out of others hair. Unfortunately I could be spending the time more productively. My last debacle was a wheel for an old bicycle. A couple years ago I let my neighbor use it and they wrecked it. Bent the rear wheel badly. I tried as I may to true it. It just wasn't going to happen. So I bought some new wheels and tires to the tune of $175 on a bike that may only be worth $100. Real smart correct. I do however like the frame and look of the bike. Retro you know. Steel. The original wheels were alloy so it made it about five pounds lighter than my Schwinn with steel wheels. I could not get the new wheels to fit. There are axle and brake issues with changing wheel sizes. Another trip to the local bike shop (LBS). Another $100 to make them work. They must think I am a real dolt. Got it back. Looking good with new Continental Ultra Race tires. Looking hot. Broke a spoke on the rear wheel the first day. The LBS replaced it for free. But another trip. More wasted time. Broke another. Then another recently. Wasn't going to fix it at first. I had found some old Schwinn wheels on ebay for a deal. They were needing some tender loving care but I was able to bring them back. Not perfect but usable. Slapped on some 27" tires I had laying around. Made it roll again.
Flush with a tiny tax return I thought I would get that spoke fixed as the bike is so much lighter, good looking and all that with those 700 alloy wheels and new tires. So I take the wheel to the LBS. They call me and tell me the old one could not be trued. I need and new wheel and a heavy duty one at that. I say yes and $70 later I have the new wheel. It doesn't match the front. But light, new and heavy duty. I could not get it to mount correctly. So I have a new wheel adorning my bedroom. With a new tire too. That of course will not work. But may if I take it to the LBS and spend more money and time. The bike is now rolling with the sixties Schwinn 27" wheels. Heavy but rolling. Not perfect.
I got on a watch kick a couple of months ago. Again a exercise in futility. I was able to get several old watches going again. Not the one that I really wanted to get working. Never perfect. But some headway. That is a hobby, a learning experience and a pass time.
Nothing that I have is perfect. I guess it never will be. It may be the same for everyone else too. You have to be happy for what you have. Consider most things as time well spent. It will all come out in the wash. Just do what you can to try to make things perfect. And as we all know that it never can be close is good enough.

The Local Bike Shop or LBS

The local bike shop is the usually family owned bicycle shop in your town or city. They usually have a franchise to sell one or several brand name bikes. They also perform service to most all brands.
Bicycles are not the most complex machines in our world but can require special skills and tools to repair or alter. Most of these tools are expensive. Even if you think you can fix a problem you may not have the correct tools to do so causing more damage. So many times all but the simplest maintenance is better off left to someone who knows how and has the tools to perform the task.
This can be frustrating to people who have a repair that costs much more the the value of the bicycle itself. So do you have it fixed or replace the bike. Most of the time a repair is the best option as bicycles of any quality can be very expensive. The dollar figures that are thrown at seem phenomenal.
I read a lot of bicycle magazines and they talk about how you need to replace the tires, chain, cables and just about everything else every year. In my little world this negates much of the savings from bicycle commuting in the first place. So take all of that with a grain of salt. I took one bike in to get a cable replaced and they said I should replace them all. Have the gears replaced. Chain replaced. About $300 worth of work on a bike that cost about $600 new that may bring $50 in trade towards a new bike.
I understand that all businesses are trying to maximize their profits. All of them do it. We as individuals do it.
The LBS is usually a hub bub of activity. Everyone needing their stuff done now. The people are also trying to sell bikes. Not just fix the old junk like me and others bring in. So it seems hectic. All in all though a LBS is a useful service that can help you out in a time of need.
So try to be patient. Don't be tempted to buy a lot of stuff. Learn to work on a lot of small things yourself. Try to buy small thing from them like lube and tires to help them keep their doors open.

How Come I Do Not Have Any Energy

I have found that over the past several weeks I do not have the energy level I am accustomed to. I am not sure if it physical or mental. Or a combination of both. I have been fighting a cold for two weeks plus now. It just doesn't seem to want to go away.
I have been through a lot of stress lately with my father's health. I drag myself to work. Get home and just vegetate. Not sleeping through the whole night. Not riding a bicycle as much.
Need to eat good meals and get a good night's rest so I can work hard and have energy to enjoy my off time. It is something we need to do!

Saving Money By Cooking At Home Means You Have To Use The Leftovers

It is a known fact that cooking and eating at home saves you money. But another fact is that you have to be able to use the leftovers. So plan for leftovers when you cook the primary meal. In most cases it can be made to use in the same fashion as it was originally cooked. Or to be used in another way. Like a meat loaf then used for sandwiches later. Mashed potatoes then fried later.
I have had the home cooking thing down for a while. But have found that I am not using the leftovers. Being shoved to the rear of the fridge only to be discarded. Try to use the leftovers within two or freeze them if you do not think you are going to use it quickly. Like large batches of soup. Freeze the most and leave a bit around for the next day or two.
Everything is going up in price. Most wages aren't. So my wasting of food is not the best plan. I know people who always eat out. So if they spend $10 on a meal and eat it all they are done. If I spend that much and get two or three meals out of it I am saving money. If I don't I waste money. Simple as that.
Not being wealthy is not a crime. But being poor and wasting things is somewhat of crime. The way that most crimes are paid for is with time and money. Your time at work. If you make ten dollars an hour and take out taxes you make about seven dollars an hour. So every seven dollars you make cost an hour of your working time. Not just your time. The time you spend earning.
Most packaging is not geared for a single serving. Two at least. So try to make and use this for two meals. I am going to try to get better at this.

Is Bicycle Commuting and Public Transportation A Frugal And Green Alternative For You?

I am fortunate as I can easily walk or ride a bicycle to work. Also to anywhere I really need to go with a little effort. For most people this luxury is not feasible. I can really get along without a car. I do however have a car and if I do not move it it costs $300 with payment and insurance. That does not include gas or maintenance. It was nice to have a car where everything worked. As my previous vehicle was a 25 year old truck which didn't have air, heat, radio and other things were breaking too. Well the new car (8 years old) developed a tiny problem. The windshield washer quit working. Both scenarios are a weeks pay to fix. Looks like I won't have a windshield washer for a while.
If you can work and live in a close proximity you do not need a car. If you can ride a bicycle you can increase your range. Having a good public transportation system is a plus too. A bus line runs past my apartment complex. It isn't the best but better then nothing.
If you are living paycheck to paycheck being green is down on the list. Frugal has to be on the top. You have to be more thoughtful to use public transportation. A bike gives you more flexibility but subjects you to the weather and security issues as you cannot lock the doors.
Get an inexpensive bicycle and get started to work and shopping if you can. You can save money and get exercise too.

Is It Still Worth The Effort To Be Frugal When They Are Telling Us Things Are Better?

The latest news we hear about the economy is that is getting better. The news makes us feel good and spend more money. Buy things we normally wouldn't. People have tax money coming in. But I still do not believe it is that much better if any at all.
But it is time to be more frugal if you can. I see retail prices on necessities slowly but surely rising. Prices at grocery stores are going up. Not just the luxury items but low line items. A loaf of white bread for $1.50. Milk over $4. Peanut butter almost $4 for a small jar. These staples are rising in price. I know that in the deli I work at the least expensive meat is bologna for $3.79 a pound. The least expensive cheese is $6.99 a pound. Just  pay attention while you are shopping.
Basic everyday clothes are going up too. Underwear, socks and shoes. All of my insurances have went up as well as their respective co pays. Gas is down now a bit but will rise as wholesale oil prices are going up.
So now we need to regroup and get over the short high of everything getting better.

Frugal Dish With One Skillet Meal

We all enjoy great food. But most of of us our on some sort of budget. Or limited income. A good home cooked meal is just the ticket. A one skillet meal at that. Cooking at home is good and a lot expensive then going out.
For this one I like to use the 12 inch iron skillet. Most all markets including mine have smoked sausage or Polish sausage on some kind of sale all the time. You will also need green peppers and onion. Two or three potatoes.
First thing is to heat the skillet with a dab of olive oil. You will not need much oil as the sausage has fat in it which will augment any additional need for oil. Chop up two small onions or one large one. Chop up a green pepper. Peal and dice three potatoes.
I like to cook this slow. You do however have to kick the heat up a bit to get the process going. I start slow. Kick it up for about twenty minutes and then slow it down a bit. Do not take off the lid and let it go. Salt and pepper to taste. This shouldn't take over about a half an hour.
Remove from the skillet with a slotted spoon slowly to let the grease slip out. Plate up and enjoy. Save your leftovers for work.

Hooked On Hype

As a society we have became hooked on hype. Some new product comes out. A sporting event. A holiday (which are only becoming holidays for people that do not work anyway). The people that work are being drug into the ground. Weird shifts. Long days. Odd days off. Etc. The people living with the same standard are at home doing nothing. The ones that are thinking they are doing well will be in for it in the near future.
The Stupid Bowl generated a lot of money for some people. But who? Every one else spent money on it. Christmas generated a lot of money for someone. But who? Everyone else got a lot of bills. Junk they didn't need. That's it. We all get exited about a day, event or anything else that really doesn't mean anything.
If you can drop the hype you can find yourself  being happier. Do not be disappointed that a boss you have has or will lie to you if they have lied to someone they have been married to. If they would lie to them do you not think would lie to you? Take everything for face value at that time. Do not think that anything is going to last. We forget things very quickly. This day and age do not expect anyone to give you more than lip service (insincere agreement or payment of respect). We are all on our own little plain.
If you have been frugal. Going to be frugal. Now is the time. Try to save money any way you can. Acquire any little skills you can. Cut your cable down to the minimum. The backlash of this will be them raising the rates on the most basic. They did that in an effort to retain customers who were on the edge anyway. Buy some stamps. So what they went up to forty-nine cents. What can you buy for forty-nine cents? You will need them to make your payments when the internet goes down. So keep on getting paper statements from the ones that bill you. Even if the internet doesn't go down. You may loose access to it. Making it impossible for you to make your payments. Leaving you in default. Hold on to both internet and paper for now.
Keep at least a half a tank of fuel in your automobile if you have one. You never know when you may wake up and not have any fuel or utilities available to you. This way you will have at least one hundred miles or so if you need it. I hope that I am wrong. But read the signs.

Non Career Spouses That Are Stay At Home Maybe They Have It Figured Out

As I work in a grocery store I see all walks of life walk through. With all that come through though I see the most happy and well centered ladies the ones that are married and their husbands go out and work, they stay home, maintain the home, do the cooking and care for the kids.
They may not have the BMWs out in the lot. Just a sedan or mini van. Not in designer clothes but dressed nice. This may be the best balance for a family person. They are not maximizing their income as one spouse stays at home (mostly). They do not seem to be in a rat race to get things done as they have allotted enough tome to get the present task done. They are generally pleasant. Nice people.
When we push ourselves too much we get stressed. Then angry. Take it out on all around. Have a bad day. If you can live without the newest and the best you can have a happier lifestyle. Instead of the kids having to be shipped to daycare they have mom at home to take care of them. If they are in school she can help with the homework. Do they even still have homework? I don't know!
Many years ago I figured that a second income must gross at least thirty thousand dollars a year to become a benefit if you have kids. With clothes, transportation, child care, lunches, insurance, cell phone and everything else. You go figure.

Stock Market

Look at the stock market today. It dove again. It will continue to dive till it rectifies itself again. Get everybody pumped up again for the holidays. Pull the rug out again. It happens all the time. The stock market reached its highest point not long ago. It will go down. I am a pessimist. I think the stock market is normal at DJIJ about $10,000. But I see 30 year old new wearing Spider Man tee shirts that actually believe in Spider Man that play video games seriously. So everybody else is probably stupid about the stock market.
You think you can make a bundle on stocks. But you have to get in and get out. That is what the big players do. The only stocks to have and keep are utilities. They do not pay mach but are stable.
How would you liked to have payed $5000 for a Stupid Bowl? Like the commercials? Watch them on TV. There are too many anyway. That is why they have TV. To have commercials. Do you think they were worried about you being bored? No media is to sell things. Magazines, TV, newspapers and radio are to sell things. And I have always liked all of the above. No wander I buy a lot of dumb stuff.
Will raising the minimum wage help things? The news is not quite right when they say these people are only making minimum wage. Most have food stamps, Section 8 housing, Medicade and other entitlements. So they are not just living on minimum wage. So raising that will only cause prices to go up  for the full time workers that are making a little over that and everybody else. If a big raise in minimum wage would work for everybody then they have to give up all the other benefits. We can all get Oboma care and be happy. But you cannot have both. Higher wages and not benefits or stay the same.
Let us watch the stock market fall some more. Get back to reality. The rich are laughing all the way to the bank with their profits. Another exiting year. Wait for the next suckering in. It will be soon.
