No matter what we set out to do there is always something to keep something from being perfect. This can be frustrating when you have thought you have given it the best and it still isn't quite perfect. This can drive you wild. Make you crazy. Waste a lot of time and energy both physical and mental on something that is tantamount to beating a dead horse. Barking up a tree. Don Quote attacking windmills.
Unfortunately I spend a lot of time and energy in just this. Sometimes money too. It is kind of a hobby. Let's call it polishing a turd. I will waste or spend a lot of time messing with something that I know from the onset will have about a 50% chance of coming out as I had hoped. And a near zero chance of being perfect. As nothing ever is perfect.
It does however keep me occupied and out of others hair. Unfortunately I could be spending the time more productively. My last debacle was a wheel for an old bicycle. A couple years ago I let my neighbor use it and they wrecked it. Bent the rear wheel badly. I tried as I may to true it. It just wasn't going to happen. So I bought some new wheels and tires to the tune of $175 on a bike that may only be worth $100. Real smart correct. I do however like the frame and look of the bike. Retro you know. Steel. The original wheels were alloy so it made it about five pounds lighter than my Schwinn with steel wheels. I could not get the new wheels to fit. There are axle and brake issues with changing wheel sizes. Another trip to the local bike shop (LBS). Another $100 to make them work. They must think I am a real dolt. Got it back. Looking good with new Continental Ultra Race tires. Looking hot. Broke a spoke on the rear wheel the first day. The LBS replaced it for free. But another trip. More wasted time. Broke another. Then another recently. Wasn't going to fix it at first. I had found some old Schwinn wheels on ebay for a deal. They were needing some tender loving care but I was able to bring them back. Not perfect but usable. Slapped on some 27" tires I had laying around. Made it roll again.
Flush with a tiny tax return I thought I would get that spoke fixed as the bike is so much lighter, good looking and all that with those 700 alloy wheels and new tires. So I take the wheel to the LBS. They call me and tell me the old one could not be trued. I need and new wheel and a heavy duty one at that. I say yes and $70 later I have the new wheel. It doesn't match the front. But light, new and heavy duty. I could not get it to mount correctly. So I have a new wheel adorning my bedroom. With a new tire too. That of course will not work. But may if I take it to the LBS and spend more money and time. The bike is now rolling with the sixties Schwinn 27" wheels. Heavy but rolling. Not perfect.
I got on a watch kick a couple of months ago. Again a exercise in futility. I was able to get several old watches going again. Not the one that I really wanted to get working. Never perfect. But some headway. That is a hobby, a learning experience and a pass time.
Nothing that I have is perfect. I guess it never will be. It may be the same for everyone else too. You have to be happy for what you have. Consider most things as time well spent. It will all come out in the wash. Just do what you can to try to make things perfect. And as we all know that it never can be close is good enough.
