The new year is coming soon. Take down the old calender and put up the new one. A fresh start as the bold new year is upon us. Everything is going to change and we are going to mend our rotten ways. All of our bad habits will disappear. We are going to get rid of all of our debts and start a big savings account. We will have the body of an Olympian. Only eat the most healthy foods. Get all the rest we need. And of course be nice to everyone. That is the grand list we all start out with. Which has usually completely dissipated by the first of February. Just about you get a firm grip on the credit card bills from Christmas. The cycle repeats itself every year doesn't it?
So what are we going to change? Some things are just beyond the pale. Goals that will never be able to be reached. So why think that you can? Make your goals achievable. Realistic if you will. Setting goals that are unrealistic causes failure and gives you an excuse to forget the ones that are. In the old days we would call that a cop out. So let us set our goals in a more attainable manner.
I will never be a good looking model. I will never be a tri-athelete. So why think that I can become one. I can however get in better shape. Maybe exercise a bit more. Walk, ride the bike and maybe a bit of free weights. As after tearing out my rotator cuff a couple of times in the last twenty years my arms have shrunk a bit. I have a hard time lifting things over my head. I still do, but it is difficult. That is something that I can try to work out. As I already have free weights and just have to use them. This is something that I can do.
Now we can talk about debt. I do not make enough money to get myself out of debt in one year. The only thing that I can do is cut it down quite a bit. That means not buying things and paying down the debts that I have. I will not be able to get them all done but make a valiant effort to get some of them gone.
Smoking. I love to smoke. I do not know what it is. It is certainly an addiction. At one time smoking was considered civilized. I remember smoking in hospitals, stores, air planes and everywhere else. You could even smoke in class when I was in college. This seems so weird to the younger generation. As a lot of them surprisingly smoke. They are used to be treated as a leper and have to go outside and hide so they do not kill everyone around them as they kill themselves. Quitting smoking will save me a lot of money and I am sure that I will feel better.
Being sick. It seems that I catch everything that blows in the wind. I have never missed so many days of work as I have in the last few years. Maybe it is because I work with raw chicken so much. I am tired of calling in sick as much as they are tired of me calling in. Try to do better this year.
Debt is always on everyone's list. Unless I have some kind of windfall I cannot pay off my debt in one year. I just do not make that much money. But with a plan I can put a good dent in it. I can use that cigarette money you know. And my nerves may be better knowing I have less debt. No need to smoke then, right. Starting with the smallest debts first. Then when they are paid diverting that money to the next etc. The next thing is not to create any more debt. Which I have done this year. I have some stuff. But I also have a bill for it every month.
Using a bicycle to get around is something that I do. But not as much as I have in the past. Lately I have been leaning on the automobile. When I would simply just ride a bicycle there. Need to get back to that. I have been riding this week and my legs tell me that I have not been riding. And they did not tell me that before. Even when I was out of work for stints put in my legs. I was able to build up again. Need to do that. Riding around the area I was in touch with the surroundings. Got an opportunity to talk to people. Kind of set a goal for others as I see a lot more people riding bicycles. You know I was the old ugly guy who rode a bicycle to work to fry chicken. Fact is the other night on the rare occasion that my boss of almost two years did not even know that I had a car to drive. In a way I think that was kind of cool. He also realized that I did not have to stay at my job because it is close to home. And that I am a pretty good and loyal worker. Two pluses thank you. Got to be the bike guy again! What better way to be in and part of the neighborhood. Everything that I really need is within bicycle range. In the past I have went weeks at a time without even starting the car.
Maybe trying to be a bit more sociable. I have shoved everyone away over the last couple of years. But for the most part they do not miss me because I can be very negative and not much fun. And I have not found a negative and not much fun girl to hang out with. Being old and ugly this is not an easy task and will be low on the list as it will probably not happen anyway. There are so many hot chicks out there and I just want one. Again this is a pipe dream. I used to go to bars and would buy or force myself on people. Only to be talked about later. So that is why I gave up. That is OK as there are many people by themselves. So perhaps I should keep America beautiful and just stay home.
Taking care of the car I drive. I say the car I drive because I do not own it. I am making payments on it. Most people think they own a car that they are making retail installments on or leasing. Just like a house you do not own it until you have the title or deed. At any rate I am doing a terrible job of keeping that car clean. It has cobwebs on the inside. All dusty. The outside however is not that bad. I can wash it in the carport that I have. But the lawn maintenance people blow stuff all over it in the carport. But I can do a better job as I can wash it for free at home with a little effort. The wheels are free of brake dust and just need to clean the inside. With a little effort the little Nissan Sentra should last me the rest of my life. As it replaced a 1989 Chevrolet Blazer I bought new. I should have just kept the 12 miles per gallon Blazer as I do not need to drive that much. If you only drive two hundred miles a month. How does a good gas mileage car help you if you have to make a payment on it? Zero! But I like my little car and it should last 15 years. But if I would have kept the old Chevrolet it may have gotten by for at least another 5 years. I admit it was vanity and paranoia. As someone is probably putting a hundred miles a day on it with little problem.
Not getting so upset at work. I work a nasty job. It is not a job that a lot of people dream of. The people I work with are not MENSA candidates or members. I usually get stuck with training the new people and the first thing they figure out is to pick the lowest fruit from the tree. And when something isn't correct I get the blame. I am over it. If I am going to be the manager, pay me like a manager and tell the people I am in charge. Otherwise I will continue to be frustrated with things that I do have the authority to fix but have not been passed down to the new workers. Nice spot heh?
Eating better is on the list too. As I often skip meals. With my work shifts constantly changing it is hard to eat in some what of a regular basis. But I need to stick to some kind of a breakfast lunch and dinner schedule. Even if it does vary time wise. On days that I work the late shift I should still have some toast and juice to get going in the morning. Then some kind of lunch. On late shifts my dinner break can vary from 4-6 PM. So knowing this I should be able to figure out how to eat right. I may not make enough money to eat the most expensive foods. But I can eat well. Also moving to a more plant based diet may be healthier and less expensive. I waste a lot of leftover. Need to use them too.
I am going to try to grow a few vegetables on the patio again. Tomatoes, bell peppers, parsley and carrots. I may even try some onions and potatoes. Marigolds and some other kitchen herbs. Nothing all that big, just a hobby. If it pans out all the better. Also relating to the patio, I will to keep it clean and neat. Even use the grills I have. Which I have not used for a long time. I used to grill all the time. But with the work schedule I have not. The gas and charcoal is sort of a pain too. I have just been using the trusty iron skillet on the old stove.
Also keeping thing neat and clean. Check out the previous post. Nooks and Crannies. It is not that hard to do and what else do I have to do?
I would also like to get this blog off the ground. It is almost two years old not and needs to get rolling. I need input from the readers to help me make that happen. I do not feel that the content is that off base. Maybe I am wrong. I need feedback! I know that when I check it I get some decent ads. Also I am a bit confused as I googled something the other day. Well one of my posts came up showing over 900 hits on it. My dashbaord shows about twenty. I do not know the difference. Multiply that by the number of posts and what I have as a record of views that is a big difference.
All of us would like to make the new year the latest and greatest. There are things that are able to be controlled by us. Other things cannot. You know. The harder I work the luckier I get. The less stupid things I do, the less bad things that happen to me. I need to move more to a lifestyle of one of my grandfathers. He never seemed bored or depressed. He retired around 1960. I think he got around $300 a month in Social Security. He had what he needed and never seemed to be broke. For a long time it did not seem that he had all that much. But he really did. He had a nice house, health until he died at 96 years old. And what got him there. A great attitude.

Having Clothes And Shoes Repaired And Recycling And Reuse
In this day and age almost everything is geared to comfort and convenience. Use it once and throw it away. Everything is disposable. This should create a boon for recycling. Unfortunately the majority of things just get buried in a landfill somewhere. No one really cares where. Just so they do not have to look at it. A very comprehensive recycling program could really cut down on such waste. Create a lot of jobs. Help keep consumer prices down.
The other day when I was off work I was going through the closet. The work pants that I have found working best for me over the years are Dickies. They are durable and stain resistant. The only problem is a seam starts to come apart in the butt section. I have thrown out many pairs just because of this. Going through the closet I found four pairs with this problem. Nothing else wrong with them. No stains, tears, bad pockets, nothing. So I got out the $1 sewing kit from the dollar store. I sewed the first pair up. It stated together. Not such a neat job though. By the third pair I sort of had it figured out. The last two pairs turned out really good. Making me wanting to kick myself for throwing away two pair a short while ago. So in theory I saved myself about $100 right now. As they run about $25 a pair with tax. How many pairs have I throw away? Many. How long will they last? don't know. What I do know is that this action prevented me form going out that day and spending $25 on something I do not really need after all. Plus whatever else I would have spent buying the trousers. Win, win. A day without spending money.
Today it is hard to find a pair of shoes or boots that are reparable. however good footwear may be next to impossible to find and not within your budget when you can find them. You buy a pair of shoes and throw them out. I do have several pairs of dress shoes that were made before the throw away age. Still classic looking shoes. Still very wearable. And repairable. In the late 1980's I heard they were going to stop making Bass shoes in the United States. I bought several pairs. A few of which have never been worn. And the pairs I did use have been resoled a time or two. Coming out as good or better as new. Consider yourself lucky if you still have a good shoe repair shop in your town. And support them with your business. It is getting to be a lost art and when they are all gone who is gong to repair your great old shoes and boots?
Have you ever heard of a tailor? Yes, they made clothes to fit you. I used to wear suits at work every day. Nothing made you feel better than a nice tailored suit. Everybody dresses so shabby today. Their used to be a tailor shop next to where I used to work. And i would actually buy clothes from him. Cool huh? Now all the stores are filled with cheap junk. Most of it is ugly too.
There was a day when your milk, soda, and beer bottles were returnable. Meaning that you paid a deposit on the bottles when you purchased the product. Upon return you got your deposit back. Another great system that reused the container, created jobs, and did not create as much waste. A good system. But it did require work and effort. Things that most people want to avoid these days. But those jobs are how people got by. Kids would even collect and find the lost bottles and turn them in for the deposit. At 5 cents a bottle and candy bars costs 5 to ten cents, go figure, it adds up. You could even make a pay phone call for 10 cents. This system also created jobs for people making the glass bottles. Now we even buy water in plastic bottles when you used to simply get it from a kitchen sink or a water fountain. Same water, no waste.
Take shaving. I shave every day with one of the Gillette Speed shavers I have. I have a 1952, 1956 and 1960 model. Obviously these were built to last. The only thing that you have to replace is the blades themselves. Which were still pretty much available till of late. I do not see them at my store or Walmart either. So I bought two hundred of them on ebay. I get about a month out of each blade. So I guess I have enough for a while. You shave with a two sided blade. Which does speed things up (guess those old folks knew what they were doing), you rinse the shaver. Pat it dry and good to go. Every few days you take the blade out and clean the shaver. No big deal. No $12 shaver to buy every week. Just think how much money you could save. Just think of how much landfill waste that never gets recycled here. They also made lady shavers too. You may be able to find them on ebay. They work great and do not shave too deep to create irritation. There are many other brands out there. Merker is a good German brand.
Think of all the things that used to be mechanical. Not electric. Everything is now elelectric or electronic. Which makes it even better! But the same thing, it just sounds better. Watches and clocks used to be mechanical. Which meant they run of power generated by a spring. You opened cans with a mechanical can opener (which I still do) if you even open cans at all. You probably just eat junk food or fast food anyway. At one point in time everything was mechanical. No electricity needed.
The latest generation is so accustomed to the throw away, no effort needed, just throw away, create waste, push a button, check it out on my phone and you know what I mean that this is the new normal. But as a society we think this is alright. Just use it, throw it away and save a lot of time and effort so we can hang out with our mobile phone. Our only true friend.
Nooks And Crannies
We all think we keep a clean house. But a objective observation from someone else may prove you wrong! We get comfortable with our surroundings. So little things do not appear. At least to us. But they may be the first thing that a visitor sees.
First of all my place is decorated in late 1970s frat house. Everything is functional, at least to me. I have a HO model railroad on the dinning room table. As if I had a dinning room anyway. There are at least two bicycles in the living room. Again as if I had one to begin with. A couch and chair that were going to be replaced by my apartment complex. Which I readily took to replace the ones I had that were destroyed by the meanest Ferrel cat that I have ever took on. This cat not only destroyed my furniture but killed a raccoon on my patio. Pretty tough. It was a Russian Blue.
I did however have the kitchen updated a few years ago. The kitchen cabinets are a nice white. Providing that I keep them clean. Between the cat and myself we have pretty much wrecked the new carpet that I got in 2009. It still beats the carpet I have in 2004. Which was from 1979. When the hurricanes came in I would just simply put the Harley Davidson in the living room. The time I did not the salt in the air from the storm rusted all the wheel spokes and corroded the aluminum.
Everything is rag tag too. I have an ancient stereo system that still kicks. A ratty TV. Old junk computer. But it works. You never know what you will see when you come to some one's home. I do not really care. As I never go to any one's home anyway. And I do not care if they come to mine.
So take a look around. Is your place a mess? Do you really care? I do somewhat. But it is not life or death. I still see dust. A few cob webs. Who cares. Dust on the furniture. Carpet need swept? I have found a good system to sweep carpet. Just use a simple corn broom. It does a good job of getting the nap up. Easy to get into tight spaces and does not require electricity. Then just use your vacuum cleaner once a week.
White vinegar and bleach will clean just about everything form the windows to the bathroom. A good dish soap like Dawn, Comet, Bar Keepers Friend will clean just about everything else.
We do not notice the little things that others do. Mostly because it is what you are used to seeing. So take a munute and look around.

Cheap Oil A Problem I Don't Think So
For all these years we have been complaining about high oil prices. A shortage of oil. Now we have too much? Next month we will have too little. As a government function let's just buy up all the oil that is available. Put it in storage until the next shortage comes along. Even if we need to build new storage facilities.
One minute we are out of oil. Now we have too much. Who is right? But capitalize on the situation and buy up and store as much as possible. Why not create a gut. But save it for later. What is wrong with that?
Through modern technology we have an abundance of natural gas and oil. Why not take advantage of his situation and save it for later. This gas and oil thing has brought about prosperity in areas that have been poor. Why knock them down now? We have supported other things as a country. Why not still support jobs. Make the oil companies continue to keep employees. They are not going to go broke soon anyway.
I am amazed as how the whole world can get turned upside down so fast. Wasn't high oil prices to blame for the high food prices? Now I guess that it is water.

Flu Shot
Again I got a flu shot this year. Again I have gotten the flu or flu like symptoms at least three times since. I am certainly wondering the effectiveness of this treatment. It isn't any fun and I may not get it next year.

Leisure Time
Leisure Time. It is the time we all look forward to. Leisure time isn't just when you are not at work. Because even if you are not at work you still have other chores to do. Your additional responsibilities are commensurate to the commitments you have created for yourself.
For example. If you have children you have other commitments above and beyond you own needs. We all have to shop, cook, clean, go to doctors, Maintain our transportation, do laundry, perform hygiene, do home maintenance and the plethora of things we must do.
After housing and transportation, our leisure time can be the most expensive things we do. Just think of the things people do for leisure. Aviation, boating, skiing, travel, collecting, entertainment, golf, cycling, model railroading (not just a train set!), hunting, fishing, gardening, computer gaming, gambling, vacations, theme parks, automobiles, motorcycles, antiques, music (both performing and listening) and just about anything you can think of. Some things are just out of reach financially for many people. But as in a previous post you do not need the best of everything.
The least expensive leisure time can be spent if you can find pleasure in the things that you have to do. In essence learn to enjoy what you have to do anyway. Not saying that you have to be passionate about doing the laundry or cleaning the house. But you do not have to loath it either. Because the end result will be something is accomplished that needed to be done. A good thing.
Leisure or enjoyment is a matter of perception. A task or action that you must take may be distasteful to one person but pleasurable to another. Some people hate doing things because our society has conditioned us to hate doing it. Even before trying it. Then when they jump in their and just do it they realize that it wasn't all that unpleasant or difficult after all. Just the thought of having to do it made it bad do to social conditioning.
Everyone has their own ideas on leisure. It doesn't have to be something real expensive. Just something you enjoy.

Bored To Death
If you think about it boredom is a cause for a lot of spending and problems. In modern times we do not have to do a lot of things to survive and consequently end up with time on our hands. Most of us do not have to hunt game or forage plants to eat. Although a lot of folks have sort of that hunter and gather mentality. We do not have to seek some kind of shelter when bad weather or some sort of beast threatens us. Free and clean water is almost always available. Free food and shelter is also available to some.
But how many people rich and poor end up doing something stupid because they are bored. The harder you have to work, the less time you have to be bored. But these folks can be hard on themselves out of spite and they personal feeling of failure. So the smoke, drink, take drugs, do stupid things, over eat, drive too fast, take risks that are not necessary, act badly and do every other thing you can think of. I do not have any sympathy for myself or anyone else who does stupid things and are surprised with the outcome. Cause and effect. Go figure.
As any animal or plant we are driven. So we are sitting around and do not do what needs to be done. Seeking an easier path. More pleasure. Less pain. No one wants to do more than the least. We all want the best with the least amount of effort. we sometimes have to apply ourselves.
We all want to think we are doing the right thing. Trying to be normal. So we spend way too much money on being normal. This kind of this and that. So we try hard to fall into some kind of conformity that has been predesignated by someone who is trying to profit from us. A piece of the action on their part. Unfortunately
Theme parks, gambling, most forms of entertainment including TV, movies, etc and all other forms of entertainment were not started and maintained for your enjoyment specifically. But for profit. Festivals are nice. But they have a promoter that has a vested interest (read as profit) in them. Why else would they bother with it. Everyone's actions has a basis. Whether it is an attempt to be benevolent or to take something from someone.

Ugly
It is awful growing up being ugly. The boys torment you. The girls don't like you. Both of them tease you. So you just kind of hang out with yourself. The geek or nerd. As a child you are quickly outgrown socially. As you really do not have a lot of friends. Definitely no girl friends. You develop hobbies and pass times that can be done solo.
As time goes on you may rear up your ugly head. Take a chance on going out somewhere. mixing with the real people. But if you play the game, you will get beat. Retroactively, I believe that the sooner you realize this. The better off you will be in the long run. Just quit trying to force nature. you cannot change facts.
I have wasted countless years and money. Caused emotional distress. Done stupid things as a result of the failure to recognize that ugly people are just that. You should maintain a good attitude. You should work hard. You should not bother anyone. And just create your own little world. If you can do this you can at least create a sort of comfort zone where you have came to grip with the fact that you just have to do what is best for you. Try to save your money. Do not bother anyone. As you just have to force yourself on anyone. Only to be repelled.
The down side to this is if in fact someone does want to do something with you you do not know how to react. Your default reaction is to just run away. Then people say, " I knew he was a loser" and you develop the reputation of being a loser. Then everyone knows you as a loser. And no one wants to be around you. As this goes on. You do not want to be around anyone. And there you are. By yourself again.
So if you are smart you would have figured this out when you are ten years old. Not at fifty years old. By this time you have wasted the best years of your life. Your healthiest times. Your best earning capacity times. And are just left to rot if you have not made the proper economic planning. And since you have spent a great deal of the past trying to fit in and amuse yourself. Chances are you are not economically prepared to live out the rest of you time in a reasonably comfortable situation. By this time you have made your bed and have to lay in it. No one is going to bail you out. You are not going to hit the lottery. So you have to spent the rest of your time and energy creating enough revenue to plug along. Indulging in what petty pleasures you may have.
You started out ugly. Now you are old, ugly and poor. Certainly not on the top ten at the debutante ball. Not even on the list of the bottom feeder ball. Not on anyone's list.
Unfortunately you cannot just go to sleep and die. That would be too easy. You have to decide if you want to live out your life reasonably healthy and happy. Find something you like to do in your spare time. I like bicycles. I like golf. I have been doing neither for a while. Although I bike to work, no just entertainment stuff. I used to plat nine holes of golf every Monday. I would go to the local muny and walk nine holes. I would go first thing in the morning and get it out of the way. I haven't played golf since June last year since the demise of my fathers health. In fact the last time I played was with him. Now on Mondays I go to my parents house and help them with as many things as I can. Eat lunch and go home. I will play golf again sometime. Hopefully with my father.
I like to cook. You can cook good food at home. This is something that you can do for yourself. And enjoy yourself. It is a good learning experience and you can dictate what goes into your food. Sure, you have to clean up afterward. But that is OK. That is part of it. Watching the cooking shows you come up with all kinds of wants and needs. But most of the time you have everything you need at home.
At this juncture in life you should have realized that no one wants or needs you unless they need something from you. And when they get it you will be dropped like a bad habit and the cycle starts again. So why bother. Stay in your own little niche. Do not bother anyone. There is not doubt you have lost the game by now. There is no use to letting someone else ground more dirt into your face. Although if you have a face like mine it may help.
What you have to do henceforth is to remember that your older relatives are getting old and dying. You are not going to win the lottery. It is not terrible to start taking care of yourself. How many times have you done something for someone and in the end you turn out like the bad guy? How many times have you seen abusive users get what they want and be the good guy? The only way to take yourself out of the hardship is to take yourself out of the hardship. Don't be mean or greedy. Be nice and conduct yourself as a gentleman.
There is no immediate game over. There is no would you like to restart the game. This is it. Period.
As time goes on you may rear up your ugly head. Take a chance on going out somewhere. mixing with the real people. But if you play the game, you will get beat. In Todays World You Can Have Just About Everything, Just Not The Best
Today almost everyone can have a lot. But simply have to settle for what would not be considered the best. This extends across the board in all aspects of life.
Take where you live for instance. Most of us have a place to live. May not be the best, but a place to live none the less. The home may not be furnished with the best furniture, appliances, flooring, bathroom, bedroom etc. But you have one. And chances are there are a lot of people in other places that would trade their AK-47 for what you have (I have never been able to figure out people who live in places that are starving, without water or anything have an AK-47).
How do you get around? Some have cars, trucks or motorcycles. Some ride a bicycle or walk. Some take a form of public transportation or a combination of all. Do you have the best? Doubt it. As just when you think you do something later and greater comes out. You will never get ahead of that game. Even the rich and famous cannot.
The food you eat and how much affects your health. So you may not be able to by the best beef and lamb out there. At this time I find that smoked sausage, Polish sausage, chicken gizzard, livers and hearts fit into my budget. Ground turkey and turkey bacon also works well. Hey it is meat. How about vegetables? How about them. Canned and frozen are the least expensive to buy and keep a long time. They are expensive too. Try growing your own. I have tried growing some vegetables and have found it frustrating in Florida. It is either too hot, too many bugs, not quite hot enough, and countless other things. And certainly not free. I will however try again.
Home furnishings. Almost all my furniture is hand me downs or the cheap Walmart stuff you have to put together yourself. Won't make Better Homes and Gardens, but gets the job done. It seems I have always had Hot Point appliances. The bottom of the appliance food chain. At least they are made in Louisville, Kentucky. Not abroad. So someone is getting paid something to make them. Not as cool as the top line brands on the cooking shows I like. As with entertainment and computers. Again pretty much the bottom line, out of date. Purchased at discount stores or yard sales.
Clothing can be purchased from thrift stores and ebay. Buying new only for undergarments and shoes. Don't need to Jos. Bank making 25,000 a year do we? A lot of things can be mixed and matched according to the season and occasion. Getting a lot of wear mileage out of less clothes. If your size doesn't fluctuate that much they can last nearly a life time.
Today we can have things that kings and queens could not imagine a
hundred years ago. And we are not even a king or queen. Hardly a citizen!
Most of the time there is a difference in quality between a high end product and a one of lower stature. Many times a brand of a product earned the higher price because a reputation of quality. Making it most desirable but less attainable to the masses. We however forget that we are part of the masses. Not the exclusive. The high end products set the standard. After and sometimes not after the other manufacturers copy the standard. Kind of like the Korean car companies spend their life trying to be like the Japanese. And the Japanese spend their life trying to be like the Germans.
So you have a ride, a crib, a stove, water, a TV, a computer, clothes, shoes and food to eat. You are blessed.

Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs are old big lizards that used to dominate the world. We always assume that they were not that intelligent. But I beg to differ. A lot of science fiction themes describe the alien beasts as lizard type creatures.
I watched Jurassic Park for the umpteenth time the other day. Didn't Laura Dern look hot in those shorts and ankle high work boots. Kind of set the style for a couple of years during the 1990's. I know I liked he look.
There really had to be some kind of Devinne intervention to eliminate the lizard dominance. We think it was a meteor. But why did a lot of the animal climate change so much. Only a few like alligators, crocodiles, monitor lizards still survive. Of course a lot of small reptiles still survive too.
So maybe the reptiles did dominate the world at one time. What sort of catastrophic thing happened to change that? To think that we are the only planet to support life in the entire universe is foolish. Something has protected us for millions of years. Again, was it Devinne? What could change the entire landscape of a entire planet? Was there some kind of big war where human looking aliens came and wiped out the big lizards?
Something changed the planet. The old Twilight Zone when the big people came here to help the Earth. Only to feed on them later. Not every planet cannot support life. Look at our own solar system. But how many solar systems are there out there? We would be naive to think that there is no other life out there unless it is just like some kind of big picture.Like some sort of facade.
We have an asteroid belt. Is that one of our protection measures? What would that stop when we have made it to Mars? Maybe against asteroids but not space ships. As the Earth's own space ships have navigated through it exploring the outer Solar System. How they make it through I do not know. As I am questionably proficient in cooking chicken in a grocery store deli. And not proficient at all at evaluation time when it is time for a raise or promotion. As extra isn't plus just the job, all bad are minuses.
So back to the dinosaurs. So why did they go away. Was it volcanoes, aliens, a self destructive lifestyle which eventually destroyed their society and genes. Or did they start fighting each other over petty things or a drive to become the dominate dinosaurs. Ones that wanted to do nothing and have everything.
Supposedly dinosaurs did exist. But I do not believe they are mentioned in the Bible. They may be. But I do not know. They do have skeletons of them. They say that is where oil comes from. Could be, Again I am not that smart.

Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs are old big lizards that used to dominate the world. We always assume that they were not that intelligent. But I beg to differ. A lot of science fiction themes describe the alien beasts as lizard type creatures.

Baked, Breaded Asparagus
On PBS I caught an excellent recipe for a baked asparagus. Crunchy like French fries. Something a bit different. Maybe a bit more healthy too. But with all the ingredients, maybe not. But tasty anyway.
Some of us may have never liked asparagus. I did not as a child, but do now. Or at least give it a try.
Get about a pound of asparagus. Always wash your vegetables. Even if it says it is washed when you buy it. Cut it in half length wise. In a bowl whisk two eggs. Add flour, Panko bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese. This can get a little thick. Just put a little water in and coat the asparagus in batter. Some put mayonnaise on the asparagus before coating with batter. I did not because I did not find any mayo in the fridge. Guess I should get some.
At any rate, preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Use a cookie sheet and spray it with Pam. Cooking time will vary as to how your oven works and how crisp you want the asparagus. So just watch it as you cook and try a sample after about 15 minutes to determine when you feel they are done.
A nice little different treat. Again found on PBS.

Idiots
Think of about all the things we do for being an idiot. Then you have to have the regret.
An idiot is below a moron and and imbecile. An idiot is a mentally deficient having intelligence in the lowest measurable range, being unable to guard against common dangers and incapable of learning connected speech. A blockhead. These are folks that were rated as not as bright as you are.
For the most part I realize that I am not as bright as I thought I am.I could also be described as obstinate and ornery. Two of my other virtues. Even being awarded a high IQ. I have done a lot of dumb and stupid things. Most people think that dumb and stupid are the same think. In my world I consider dump not knowing and stupid as knowing and not doing the right thing. So as an individual we can do both dumb and stupid things. Even when in reality we are not idiots. Although acting as one. Sometimes by being dumb (not knowing) or being stupid (knowing better but doing it anyway) we do things are just not that bright.
I think that as a society we are moving to be more like idiots. As as a race our skill sets have evolved a great deal. Maybe not for the better. We no longer are capable of providing our own food. Most of us that do not already have money trade our time and energy to earn cash to pay for food, shelter and other needs and wants.
As technology advances, we continue to more away from being able to survive and be social. Now we have our little smart phones and drift into our own little worlds. Not dealing with the outer world. Kind of like a pacifier you would give to a little baby. When I am having lunch in the break room everyone is sitting there in a catatonic state. But since everyone else is doing it, this have became the norm. If everyone else is jumping off a bridge, I guess you have to do so also.
When think about our attitudes of we have about different eras. Decades etc. You think of the American Civil War Era. How they dressed and wore their hair. You know the 1920s with the pin striped suits and flapper women. The 1930s and 1940s with men in suits, women with dresses, heels, hairstyles and hats. The 1960s and 1970s with mod and hippie styles. A return to classic styles in the 1980s and 1990s. Now you hardly ever see anyone dressed nice. Just frumpy at best. The snapshots of the current era will have all these sloppily dressed folks walking around with their heads bent down staring at something in their hand. What will people think in the future?
The rich are getting richer. The working poor, poorer. And still we act like idiots. People go out of their way to be an a**hole. When most of the time it would take less effort to just be nice. Why does everyone have to have a bad attitude. Why are people (even young people) sick and tired all the time? People go to the gym, but when they get to work they are tired and cannot do anything. Get your exercise at work. Novel idea.
The bottom line is we are not functioning well as a society. Is it because there are more takers than givers. As Rodney King said "Why can't we just get along?". In the Civil War 630,000 soldiers died with countless thousands to "free the slaves". We are all in this mess called life together. Why do we need to belligerent? Why do we have to be mean to each other? Why do we not think and do your job efficiently and with a tad bit of enthusiasm?
I constantly have to tell people to do something. After a while you would have think that they have caught on. They have caught on alright. They have thought of every menial task to do preventing them from doing what needs to be done. Everyone wants to be a loafer. Again why not just think of what needs to be done and do it. Nothing upsets me more than a few workers standing around talking when a customer is wanting help. Then when I call someone to help them they just look at me as if I am some kind of monster. No one seems to want to do anything but pick the lowest fruit from the tree. The go to mentality that created the United States is dead. Why would you want to bother with a $10 an hour job when you can live better for free?
The more the population grows the more idiots we will have born. So if you are not an idiot already, try not to be one.

The Craziness Of The Holidays
The Holidays are right here right now. The grocery store is absolutely insane with customers. A lot of new faces with old faces mean that they have friends and relatives in town for the Thanksgiving Holiday. As usual people are in a frenzy. Shopping and getting ready to cook for the Holiday. Or some people simply just eat out. My family has done this for years. As it can be more economical and certainly less complicated. No shopping. No cooking. Nothing to clean up. Many buffets offer other food than the traditional. So if you do not like turkey and stuffing you can enjoy something else. If it is however on the menu.
We are however like sheep. Follow tradition. Pig out. Make a mess. Have leftovers and than mostly waste them. People than sit around sick from eating too much and watch the insanely stupid sport of football. And than we worry about Black Friday. A day named so because that is the day a lot of retailers go from red ink to black ink on their accounting records. For those of you who are too young or not abreast with accounting. Red ink on a journal means losing money and black ink means making money. So Black Friday means you have reached a point where you are now making money. So it it all about making money.
In the old days the holiday was the holiday. Everyone went back to work the next day. Now we make four day holidays out of just about everything. So now Thanksgiving is a four day holiday for people who work and do not work anyway. Franklin Roosevelt made Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of the month of November instead of the last to kick up the economy. To get us ready for the next Holiday. Christmas.
Again years ago Christmas was a one day Holiday. Now we drag it out for at least a week or so. I admit, I used to take about the week before and a day or so after for vacation. Being in sales a lot of business customers realized they needed to spend money before the end of the year to realize tax breaks or to not show too much profit. Like shooting fish in a barrel. I could rake that last week of the year. So I had to be there. As my other business was summer based.
Then we come to in my mind the least valuable holiday. New Years. Really just an accounting reset. As we change the calender. A big time to dump inventories. As normally you as taxed on then at the end of January. So in January you have the White Sales and every other thing you can think of.
The exercise machine advertisements start hitting then. As you have gotten fat over the Holidays. Don't worry though. You have the Stupid Bowl and then Valentine's Day to worry about. But do not. Easter is on it's way.
