Really Smart People

As I write this little blog. I have to think about the really smart people out there that made it even possible. Think about it. Someone had to think of it. Make a prototype. Then make it happen. All  the aspects of modern life are really great. We have just grown to be used to it. We all get depressed about things. At least I do. Mad or disappointed about things. As we go to the bathroom. Go to the fridge. Have the air conditioning or heat on. Turn on the stove. Get a glass of water from the sink.
The highest kings and queens did not have these luxuries two hundred years ago. Sure they had a lot of help with things. Nothing however to what almost everybody has now. Think I need a checkup from the neck up. We should be thrilled to have the lives we live. I am one of the first ones to be a whiner. My bad.
Only as far back as my father things have changed. He actually didn't have city water until 1957. They had pumps, wells, water heater, and pipes. Had plumbing. Coal heat. When it the last time anyone you know had to shovel coal to fire a furnance? I am however old enough to remember my grandmother sending me to the basement to bank the fire in the coal furnance. Looking back that was a fun thing for me to do. Taking part in something that needed done.
I guess that we all have a big thank you to go out to the really smart people who have made a big difference in life. Makes me realize that I am just a little dummy that whines too much. I guess that I just try to fine tune everything. Really need to fine tune myself.
Let's say it is two hundred plus years ago. It is night. So it is dark without a candle or something. I have no TV. No computer, No books or magazines. No phone. No bike, No car. No nothing as far as we are concerned. How did people stand it? What made the change? How come this all happened over the last couple hundred years? The population has increased a great deal in that time period too. Is it harvest time for some aliens? They did start showing up after the A bomb.
Again I think that we have to thank those people who came up with all the ideas. I am so dumb I would either be relying on sticks and stones or would have been eaten by some wild animal. Can barely make it on a job that a moron could do. Or a moron can make. We have to make the best of what we have. Have to behave. And don't forget to be nice. It's a lot bigger than me.

Simply Tolerated

We all like that warm and fuzzy feeling. People greet you. They speak to you and are freindly. It's nice. Makes me feel good. Bet it makes you feel good too. This contibutes to a good day on my part. If someone is callus we back off and maybe or maybe not wonder why. Being callus can be a defense mechinism or a conditioned response. A conditioned response is one's unconscious response to a repeated experience. "I'm not going to be nice because before everytime I was I was taken advantage of or stolen from." This can and is true. Most people are however nice. We all have our idiosyncrasies. Our own charictaristics. In most cases it is just as if not easier to be nice as it is not.
So in most of our interactions with people I try to be nice. Do you? We have all been hurt, stolen from and disappointed. Have many times have I done the same? That is in the past now and we need to move on the the next ( and hopefully better) page. Shake it off. Move on. Try to have a pleasant day. The more you are pleasant, the more pleasant people around. Then most are pleasant. Rather than just tolerated.
Being tolerated is just one step from the bottom. It is like that C grade in a school class. Not great, but not bad either. So if we could be in the C+ to B+ area we will probably be doing well. So by being tolerated people do not hate us. They also do not love us. It is just a sign that we are doing our job of being decent human being instead of animals. I am certainly not the best. But hopefully not he worst.
Everyone has their own veiw. Their take. That is how you are to them. You do too. So if we all take this as a fact of life we can contiribute to a nice day for everyone. Simply tolerated, a pleasant day. Less stress. More fun. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed.

Serious Money, Not Much Money

Moving around out there you can observe that there are people with serious money and those without much money. Then there are people in the middle. That is probably the best place to be. I am not there. But I guess I need to work on that. I am a not much money person. I could have been in the middle if I had not made so many mistakes. Mistakes cost money and time. And for the most of us that's all we have. Mostly time. My grandfather told me that he hopes he has more time than money. After being born in 1901 going to work in a coal mine at 14 years old.he lived till 96 years old. Would have lived longer if he didn't die in a hospital from a staff infection.
These old people used to work hard. For not much money. They were comfortable with the fact that others have a great deal. Others do not. Didn't seem to bother him a bit. He missed World War I by one year. Too young. Two of his brothers weren't. One died, the other had his finger shot off. They called him Niney. He did however have to work to survieve.
Chances are that if you are from Europeon decent, you are not of royal decent. So you would have to have been a serf. Basically a slave. You were subservant of the futile lord. So I guess I should sue the Irish, Scottish, English, Hungarian, Polish, and Russian governments for my poor treatment after hundreds of years. How far is that going to go? So I just have to get over it. I never had any warring tribes sell me to the Dutch,
So these people that have a whole lot of money are leaving Florida. Thanks for visiting. I hope we treated you well. Go back and then come back again. We will be rested up for you.

Glass Houes

It is said that if you live in a glass house. You should not cast any stones. That is good advise. We all look at things from our own prescective. The world revolves around us, right. Well with the world revolving around every single person. It is spinning out of control. But it has always spun in this fashion.
Nothing is new. It has all been done before. It is however true. Think about it. The lives we live. The things that we do. They have all been done before. There is a pattern here. Some may call it stereoype. But if you go back and check the records, they hold true. That's why there is a system. People have been around for a long time. They will mostly be around for a long time. In one way, shape or fashion.
But we are here today. For the seemingly long time but really short time. Take this next day. Try your hardest. Be the best. Work hard. Be nice. Sometimes it is just as easy to be nice than not. Give it a whirl. I will. Try. It will make things easier on eveyone.

Zappa

A lot of people have never heard of Frank Zappa. He is probably one of the best guitar players that lived. His music is not at all mainstream. His lyrics are totally wild. Frank Zappa has hundreds of albums. First as Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Convention. Later as just Frank Zappa. He is considered an American composer. And compose he did. I do not think that anyone could call him a copycat.
The period that I like is from 1974 to 1981. 1974's Apostrophe is a clasic. One that got him on AM and FM radio. "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow". With lyrics like "watch out where the Huskies go and don't you eat that yellw snow". Purely genius. I also like Zoot Alures, Sleep Dirt, Orchesral Favorites ( with the LA orchestra), Sheik Yerbouti, Joe's Garage vols. 1,2 and 3 and You Are What You Is. I beleive that you will find them very entertaining.
Some of the langauge on the later albums wouldn't make the radio and shouldn't be played in the presence of minors. May be more suitable to personal listening with headphones! They reflect a veiw of life that most of us ignore. That we act kind of goofy. Pragmatic, politically incorrect, insightful and mostly if not all true. You see, most of of do not want to admit the truth. It will make you crack up laughing. Because we really are what you is.
If you just want to try it out go to You Tube. Punch in Frank Zappa and you can get all the samples you want. I have these albums on vinyl. But have been able to replace them all on Ebay with legal CDs made by RYKO FZ. So they are legal copies.
In college an elective class I took was Music Appreciation. The professor wanted us to bring in a song we liked. I listened to some of the tear jerking, disco, country, riding hme by youself stuff. I brought in FZ's "Broken Hearts Are For A__holes". Everybody cracked up laughing. The prof just looked at me. But I did get an A in that pretty much worthless class.

Been At It A While

As I am new to posting blogs. I have been at it a while. I have not received any comments. Is the content so bad that you just read it and run? I am trying to come up with some good stories that will entertain and hopefully help. A little feedback would help a lot.
Maybe I am just dwelling on my own experiences too much. Not standing out in a crowd among the many, many bloggers. I am working on it. I want to keep this clean and not provocative. We just don't want to do it here. This is something that I want your kids to be able to read also. No weirdo stuff.
Take a little time and just check it out. Point me in any direction. What do you want to know about? Little things add up. This is what make mountains. In many instacnces it is just as easy to be nice as it is to be not. The people that are not nice are miserable. With themselves and others. Don't get in this trick sack.
Others can only atempt to ruin your day. You have to be the one who  makes or breaks your day. I try to anticipate actions and behaving of others. For the most part I am correct. Other times I miss it enteily. So you never know. Sometimes I think that I am dumb not stupid. Dumb means you just don't know. Stupid means that you know but mess up anyway. With knowledge. For the most part. I am stupid.

SyFy History, Food, AMC and A&E

Sometime in 1995 I was in Owensboro, Kentucky waiting for my freind to show up to play in the Kentucky Turf Grass Councils tournament. Hanging around the snack bar looking at the little TV on the wall there was this old golf show. Shell's Wonderfull World of Golf. I thought this is cool. "The Golf Channel" the guy said behind the counter. I like that.
Another time not so far off I was waiting to play golf again in the clubhouse and looking at the TV. Lost in Space was on I liked that show as a little kid. Then during the break came this voice," you are watching Sci Fi. I like this too.
Then I got a call from the cable company to see if I was interested in an upgrade that they had. All these wonderful channels. So I hooked up. I got new favorites. The Golf Channel, History Channel, A&E, Food Channel, AMC, Discovory and Turner Classics.
History used to have well history. Golf had a lot of the old shows from long ago. I started watching this Food Channel. Got to liking some of those shows. Coulndn't wait to get home to watch Emeril Live. Got hooked on A&E on Mondays and Tuesdays with those great BBC (English) mysteries. The Monday lineup was Sherlock Holmes, Peroit. and Miss Marple. All of which were just the bomb. Top notch and great. AMC had movies without commercials. As did Turner Classics. The original Star Trek came on at 11pm. Although I know the next line that will be coming out of their mouth from watching them so many times I still like to watch them. I never had the Star Trek jammies though.
The point being here is that there were so many choices of what I considered great shows. Now I still have about the same channel lineup. Sometimes I cannot find anything I want to watch. The reality thing has went overboard. I guess they are cheap to make. Food Channel is basically a no watch for me now. Watching a bunch of freaks race to make something for some bunch of pundits or supposed pundits. AMC has a good movie every once in a while. Between a bunch of their own productions. I don't even watch A&E anymore. The Golf Channel and Travel Channel was chopped from my package. The Golf Channel is now mostly just a few people sitting around talking. No more old shows. SyFy keeps showing the same movies again and again. Along with some dumb shows. None of the old classics anymore. Sometimes the old Twilight Zones.
The HD upgrade is a waste too. The same channels in HD with a few add ons. Not worth the extra cost to me. They have so many worthless channels. How about a Hobby Channel? Don't have one of those. Might be good. Can't remember watching the regular network shows for years. Guess I need to get a life and not worry about it. I usually just watch what's on. Many times I have seen it before. Or just pull something up on You Tube I like. How did we survive with just 3 major networks, PBS and maybe a little independant? Well I think. Sometimes too many choices can make us unhappy. That applies to more that just TV!

The Utility Of Bicycles

I now have four bicycles. I was up to six counting an old racing bike I bought for $10 at a yard sale. I was however able to make it usable. The stem was stuck. The seat post was stuck. The stem would normally be the hard part. Fixed it, Seat post forget it. I tried everything. Donated it to the local bicycle shop. One of the young folks there could probably got the post out. It was an excellent canidate for one of those one speed fixties they like. The bike itself was a made in England Viscount. The parent company made aircraft or things for aircraft. It was very large (too large for me). Made out of the aircraft metal, with an aluminum fork I thought it quite rare. It was fairly. I found all this information on Sheldon Brown's website. Although he has passed away his website lives with the help of some freinds. I would recommend this site for anybody that has an interest in bicycles. Everything you would want or need to know and more. I hope that this bike was put to good use or at least recycled properly.
Another bicycle was an Azuki. This was another sport/tour bike that I bought on Ebay. This was a really nice bike. All top end parts including the bar end shifters that only one makers produce now. The bar end shifters are at the end or bottom of the handlebars as the name suggests. A must have of vintage touring bikes and a few today. I think that the DuraAce brand is the only one who makes them now. Again this bike was too large for me. See I didn't know this before. I did ride it. Had was spotless. Everything worked well. A pretty sharp 1972 bicycle. A young man that I worked with wanted to buy the bike. His father rides bicycles and offered me $200 for it. I told him that I couldn't take that for it. But I would take $120 if I could throw in an extra set of tires that I had for it. I think that we settled on about $140. Another good bike has a home.
Next in line is a 1984 Raleigh Record. The old Records were English made. This one is made in Tiawain. It is a nice bike. I traded an old Mongoose moutain bike for it. It was pristene. I let my neighbor ride it. He wrecked it and ruined the rear wheel. I tried as I may to true the wheel. This is an ardent task. A skill that bicycle mechanics pocess. I tried and tried. Got it right somewhat. But the first bump wrecked it again. This bike is actuly my size. I wanted to keep it. Under the either of an oral surgurey I bouhgt 700cc wheels for it,. I took the gearset from the Viscount and put them on the new 700 wheels. Gave the old gearset to a buddy who needed one. This is my fastest bike. It is chromoly. ETC. I first took it to the Trek (and) Raleigh dealer. They basically laughed at the bike and said this is your speedster. While displaying many if not all bicycles of name brands made in Tiawain and China. Go figure.
My baby is a Schwinn LeTour. It is a 1974. Who knows how many miles that it has on it. It is made of high tensile steel and strong as can be . It weighs about thirty pounds. Who cares. With the exception of redoing the headset bearings everything is original. The chain, wheel bearings, wheels, seat, shifters and most everything else is orininal. I also replaced the shifter cables. Tough bike. These were made by Panasonic. I guess they make eveything. As good or better than the Varsity. And only weghts 3 pounds heavier than the Paramont of the day. Someone in Louisville Kentucky is trying to get $800 out of one of these in super condition on Ebay.
My daily roller is an old Trek 800 moutain bike that I put BikeNashbar 26-1.15 street tires on .It has turned out to be a very venerable bike. I have loaned this bike out before. It has always came back intact. I do not know how. But it has. One of the users was a son of my neighers that rode it about 20 miles a day,
The newest bike is a Trek 7100 hybrid. Nice bike. Got over $800 in it with everything. It is a good bike. Made in China I think. Not like that old Raleigh  made in Taiwain. See this is new and so it's OK if it's made in the China, becuse all the name brades are made there now.So is the 1984.Iit OK that's it is an imported bike? Only time will tell. Where is your Reileigh made? And I guess who cares.
All the bikes together wouldn't be worth $200 in trade at a bike shop I'm sure, I have added parts and tires etc. A lot of sweat equity that is not equity at all. Just a bike that you can ride. The eight years or so that I have taken an interest has been good hands on lessons about bicycles. Being able to fix and change tires will save you time and money. Also do you own maintaniance. It is also something to do that will not cost much when you have the basic tools. Instructions are availible on the internet and from books from the library.
I made a lot of mistakes as far as size and types of bikes. That's how I ended up with so many that I have put a lot of time in and can never get that back. But it was a learning experience. One or two bikes should be enough. The simpler the better. Good used rather than cheap new. Although I started out with a cheap new that fell apart.
I do not load up my bike to take it somewhere to ride. I just ride it where I want to go. The store, work, and etc. The bus system has a rack to put bikes on. So you can put the bike on the bus and get closer to where you are going if it is farther than you want to ride.
If you commute after dark as I do you will need a front and rear light. Also most bikes already have reflectors instatlled. Local bike shops, most Walmarts and Ebay can supply you with what you need. I mostly use back packs for carrying the stuff I need. I do have racks mounted on two bike that with the bags let you carry a lot. So if you can get out that old bicycle. Or get yourself an old bicycle. Tinker with it and go for a ride.

Nerds

Most of us would hate to admit it. But I'm a nerd. If you look like a nerd. Act like a nerd. Smell like a nerd (Old Spice or Brut). You must be a nerd. Every once and a while I climb out of my nerd hole. Try to blend into the mainstream. Do something daring. Strike out. Be bold. Get with it. Only to be soon detected and shot down. I have tried again and again over the years. But it is what it is. A cow don't make ham.
So I have made a little compilation of nerd do's and don't. This little guide is in no means is not set in stone. It could be just considered an opinion. So this is for amusement purposes only.

NERDS DO NOT:
1.smoke
2.drink
3.have debt
4.use bad lauguage
5.go to bars
6.try to bother anyone
7.miss or be tardy for work
8.get too upset
9.stick out in a crowd
10.try to be cool

NERDS DO:
1.live within means
2.able to amuse themselves frugaly
3.eat well
4.live sensibly
5.stay home
6.do not need the latest fahions
7.do not be rude
8.know their limitations
9.know that they are not desireable to women

Once you figure this out you can consider yourself a real nerd. I am working on it every day. So far I have fell short on many of the listings. But I will keep trying. Because there is no reason to believe that this is  a fact to be dealt with. It's Calvinism. You can't change it.
I came up a statment. " I could go out dressed up in a new Burberrys suit, driving a Jaguar, with hundred dollars bills taped on me. In the end. I would end up walking home broke, naked and by myself." The way it is. Quit fighting it. Just be nice. It will work for everybody, You are what you is!

Not Missing Out

Another weekend is here. I will be working Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I may be missing out. But from what really? There is a high price of boredom. People cannot or will not be able to amuse themselves or use their time to work on chores that need to be done. That would not be fun. There's something going on out there. I am not sure what. But I am going to look for it. I am not going to be missing out.
Well I am not going to be missing out either. I will be trying to make everybody happy. Working hard to earn my little pay. So I can eat and live. And go to work another day. That's alright.. I will be off Monday from the store. OOOOPS. Got to work my part time job Monday.
Twelve days till Spring. Been a cold snap here in Florida. Be real hot soon. Have a good weekend and please do not miss out on anything!

Disapproved!

I have been working on getting on the Google AdSense program. I followed the instruction and filled out the form. I get disapproved. You cannot contact these people. I tried to email them back. It is a no response email. The reasons they say are vague and not specific. The help pages just keep going round and round telling me much of nothing.
Maybe I will get it figued out. Maybe I won't. These people must be on some throne somewhere and and not to be bothered. I realize that they are very busy. But they should be a little clearer on their answers and decisions.

The Part Time Barter Job

I live in (mostly) sunny Florida. You can get outside without much problem all year. Not as though you cannot get outside anywhere all year. It is however more pleasant here in the winter. A bit warm in the summer. The heat and humidity are however tantamont to the summers in Louisville Kentucky and Evansville Indiana where I used to live. So it is not a big deal to me. After ten years here however, forty degrees feels cold!
Well back to the part time job thing. I have been checking the papers, internet, Craigs List and word of mouth for a part time job. Not much that I have the skill set for or desire to do. Remember the post about doing the same thing that you regularly do. Also I wanted something within a resonable distance. Don't want to spend $20 in gas to get to something that pays $30.
Checked the local businesses first. Something within bicycle range. No fuel used. Mostly profit. To no avail. Only a few things that are basically the same thing that I do on a regular job. Not really what I was looking for. My old part time job was at a historical park. My college minor was history. As I was doing my servitude job people would ask me questions that I could inteligently answer. How cool is that. Fact is the person sweeping up at a theme park is generally paid well. Peole do not want to feel dumb by seeking the information center. So they ask the lowly sweeper. Kind of like the man who won't ask for directions.
Anyway. I found my part time job. I work at what is by the local newspaper as the best golf course in the area. It has a lot of members. It is very well kept. It has high standards. But not too frumpy. The members all seem very nice and accept the fact that they need a little revenue from outside play. Everytime I work I can get a free lunch which is always very good. For every time I work I get two free rounds of golf with one guest. The normal fees are $59.
Although after working there for four months I have only played two rounds of  golf. But I have been able to take my father there to play. I can take anyone. This is like money in the bank. So in theory this is a win win situation (hate to use that old eighties term).
It gets me out and motivated. I meet new people. It is social. You meet a lot of nice people on the golf course. Right now there are a lot of people from up north. What we call cold here is like spring time to them. So we take for granted our usally nice weather. My major concern is that everybody has fun. I try to talk to every group to reienforce that. They are not here for tourture, But fun.

Is Anyone out There? Part Time

Is anyone out there? This is my ninth post and I have yet to get a comment. I do appreciate that I have had some views. If I continue to post something that will be interesting to folks and get a following. That would be swell!
Well my work week is over. Well kind of. I work a part time job on Mondays. This is a great way to make a little extra when you don't make much. You work five days a week at your normal job. No matter what you do you cannot make any more money. Unless of cousre you can get overtime. I used to get a lot of overtime. But with the advent of a "bad" economy, companies cutting back, doing more with less etc. That went away. So you make do with what you make on your regular job. Or you do something else with your time besides guarding the TV, playing video games or surfing the net.
Though experience I have found that you want to do something different than what you usually do. The reason being if you do what you always do is an extension of your normal work. After your normal work why would I want to do the same thing? If you cannot get overtime at your same task you are making your real job more of a task. So you have to diversify.
Let's say that my regular job has a lot of in your face. Find something that takes you away from that. A menial task that you just have a task to be completed. I think that one time I raked a hundred million leaves. Picked  them  up and put them in a dumpster. It was cool. The leaves didn't talk back to me. Just put them in the right dumpster. I did not the first time. I figured it out and was ultimately offered a full time job there. From bottom I went to second in charge. But you cannot be a loafer. You have to take charge.
The other thing that you can do is take a job that pays barter. A barter job has its risks. If you get hurt, you are on your own. So I sugest that you do not take on a very daring task.
The last is about letting someone use something. Make it very clear that they are  using it, You  use it or you  don't. Check your chain. Does it need lubed? Have fun, get by and make money.

Working The Weekend

Another great thing about working retail is having to work weekends. What, that is great? It's not that bad to me. Some people have always worked Monday through Friday and the thought of working on a weekend is beyond the pail. If they have to work one or two Saturdays a year they scream. I have always worked on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for many years having weekdays off. This takes the big weekend thing out of the picture. It can also provide for a more productive day off that you can get things done that you would not be able to do on the weekend. Like doctors appointments, dentists, license branches, etc.
Remember the old song, "Workin' For The Weekend". Not me. I'm working for Monday and Thursday. I can just waive at my neighbors dragging out on Monday mornings after their big weekend. Then if I feel like it I can just watch Matlock on WGN!
By the way, have a nice weekend.
